conductive painting

CONDUCTIVE PAINTING
artists —> Stefan Baumberger, Sian MacQueen, Nicole Heidtke
ages —> 12-25 (will be tailored to age group)

Working with cast and carved textures and through the layering of Acrylic paints,
you will take inspiration from the natural world to create interactive paintings
that invite you to touch them. As a final layer you will paint or print elements
with conductive paint and connect these to a microcontroller. Once these
elements on our paintings are touched, they can trigger sounds or led lights.
Your paintings will become responsive!
Programme Elements
· Wednesdays After school drop in sessions at talc. – from 3 February (8 sessions)
· Experimentation Days
· bookable for 1-3 days for School and Youth Groups
· Summer School at talc.
· CPD Artmap Artists

either print them in a traditional way onto cotton, linen or silk – or they will be
printed digitally at talc. or with a professional print company.
Module 2: Clothes can go crazy: with sensors, microcontrollers and just a little
bit of programming they will start to blink or make a sound – you can design
them as you wish!
Schools and Youth groups can book either one of the modules or both of them.
Programme Elements

kinetic sculpture

KINETIC SCULPTURES · POETIC ROBOTS
artists —> Stefan Baumberger, Sian MacQueen, Nicole Heidtke
ages —> 12-25 (will be tailored to age group)

We will have a whole range of themes around making kinetic sculptures
and poetic robots. You want to make your sculpture move? You will take your
inspiration from your natural surrounding – for example what kind of magical
creatures could live (or lived) in a natural habitat like Moine Mhòr?
This module can be combined with the augmented landscape module or a
Moine Mhòr Bog walk, led by Scottish Natural Heritage.
Programme Elements
· Wed After school drop in sessions at talc. – from 24 August (10 sessions)
· Tues After school drop in sessions (project (de)code landscapes) at talc.

AR

AUGMENTED LANDSCAPE/REALITY
artists —> Stefan Baumberger, Nicole Heidtke
ages —>14-25 (will be tailored to age group)

Augmented Reality (AR) is a digitally enhanced view of the “real” world. Make
your photos, texts or kinetic sculptures appear in the landscape or use them
as an expanded view of a printed page of a book – simply use the aurasma (or
other) app and an ipad (or your phone).
This module can be combined with the kinetic sculptures or the digital
photography & video module.
Programme Elements
· Wednesdays After school drop in sessions at talc.
· Experimentation Days
· bookable for 1 up to 3 days for School and Youth Groups
· Summer School at talc.

ages —> 12+, adults (will be tailored to age group)

This workshop is all about photography and how to improve your photos with
the professional software Adobe Photoshop – but you will also dig out some
archival material about the area. The second part of the workshop is about how
to design leaflets, posters and booklets in the graphic design software Adobe
InDesign to make them ready for print.
This is a d.i.t. (do it together) workshop – you will decide as a group about content
and style of the publication.
Programme Elements
· Tuesdays after school drop in sessions at talc. & Mondays at MAYDS

music

MUSIC – CORRYVRECKAN & MOINE MHÒR
artist —> John Grant
ages —> 14-17

For many thousands of years, mankind has called upon our natural surroundings
to the provide materials and inspiration for the creation of music. Using a wide
range of acoustic and electronic resources, you will be invited to create a sonic
work or works celebrating the sounds and structures found in this magical
part of Scotland. From the elemental drama of Corryvreckan at spring tide, to
the delicacy of summer wild flowers on the Mhoine Mhor, the musical canvas
offered in this project is both vast and exhilarating.
With a career as an orchestral musician, conductor and music educator, John
Grant’s musical inspiration has become increasingly diverse and is leading him
down a new and untrodden path towards a musical unknown horizon.
Programme Elements
· bookable for 3-4 days

sound programming

SOUND PROGRAMMING
artist —> Adam Staff
ages —> 14-17

Whether through DNA, weather patterns, or the food chain, the natural world
is constantly turning small numbers of interacting rules and behaviours into
beautiful and complex systems. In this workshop, we will explore the creation
and manipulation of small elements of visual code, using them, and data from
other scientific and artistic parts of the project, to generate and change sounds.
Then we will discover how the evolving relationships between these elements
can generate musical systems that help us understand and pay tribute to the
natural world.
Adam Staff is a freelance producer, programmer, engineer and composer, who is
equally likely to be found in a theatre, an art gallery or a recording studio.
Programme Elements
· bookable for 2 days

MOINE MÒR BOG WALK
SNH reserve manager —> Gordon Campbell, Doug Bartholomew
ages —> 12-25

In combination with other modules of our programme, like kinetic sculptures
or augmented landscape, you can book a Moine Mhòr Bog Walk with one of
the Scottish Natural Heritage Reserve Managers to explore the fascinating
landscape. Be inspired by plants, birds and moths!
Moine Mhòr National Nature Reserve (NNR) is a bog showpiece. Covering over
500 hectares this ‘Great Moss’ forms the wild heartland of Kilmartin Glen. Raised
bogs are one of Europe’s rarest and most threatened natural wildlife habitats,
home to plants and animals specially adapted to survive in the water-logged
conditions. At Moine Mhor, glistening dragonflies and graceful hen harriers
hunt over the colourful patchwork carpet of bog moss, cotton grass and heather.
Fringed by tidal flats, saltmarsh, brackish grassland, fen, alder carr and ancient
oak wood land, this intact transition of habitats adds to the Reserve’s rich
diversity of wildlife. Coastal birds, otters and the rare marsh fritillary butterfly all
make their home here.
